Tips on Wearing a Saree on a Plus Size Body

The saree is a traditional outfit worn in countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India. They come in all different colors and styles. Not only are they beautiful, they are actually comfortable to wear once you master putting it on. If you happen to be on the plus side, wearing a saree can bring out your insecurities. Here are 5 tips on wearing a saree on a plus size body.

If you’re on the curvier side, there are a few things you can do to feel more confident in a saree. You do not have to have an hourglass figure to rock one. Remember, any body can look beautiful in a saree.

Tip One: Choose the Right Fabric

Fabrics play a significant role on how the saree will look and feel on you. If the fabric feels uncomfortable, you’ll also look uncomfortable. Avoid fabrics like silk that can cling onto your body or thick fabrics that can add a bulky appearance.

Tip Two: Color and Patterns

Let me start of by saying that this is 100% a personal preference. Just like my everyday wardrobe, I prefer my sarees dark and without a lot of patterns. The dark, solid colored sarees with details on the edges appear cleaner and look good on any body type.

Tip Three: All About That Drape

You can switch up how saree looks on you based on how you drape the excess fabric. Avoid draping it over you arm, hiding your body. Instead, have it draped over your shoulders, exposing your body and arms. This will give your body more shape to it rather than looking like you’re wrapped in a burrito.

Tip Four: Fitted Blouse and Skirt

The blouse and the skirt is just as important as the saree itself. Make sure the size of the blouse is not too tight nor too loose. Wear the skirt above your belly button. Think of it as a crop top paired with a high-waisted skirt. This way you’re still showing a bit of your mid-drift without feeling too uncomfortable.

Tip Five: Shoes and Accessories

Don’t neglect the shoes and accessories! Grab a pair of high heels, or wedges (easier to walk in) to add some length to your look. As far as accessories, I go for the chunky bangles and statement earrings since it draws attention to those areas and away from others.
