I used to look at t-shirts as a way to cover and hide my body. I’ve always thought that since I had a bigger body, the bigger the t-shirt I need to wear. Over time I’ve realized that t-shirts didn’t need to be oversized and boring. If you’re struggling with styling a simple t-shirt, here are my top tips on how to style a t-shirt on a plus size body.
The beauty of t-shirts is that almost everyone can find one in their closet. From graphic t-shirts to just a plain solid color, a t-shirt is a staple in everyone’s wardrobe, all shapes, and sizes. So the next time you’re looking for an outfit, grab a t-shirt and you may be able to easily put one together.
MAKE SURE IT FITS JUST RIGHT
The biggest mistake people make is wearing an oversized t-shirt. Unless you’re styling an oversized t-shirt dress with a belt, wearing a much larger t-shirt will make you appear even larger. A t-shirt doesn’t need to be very clingy, but it shouldn’t be so big where two of you can fit in it. Think flowy, not so oversized it could be a tent. One of my favorite pair of affordable t-shirts is this one from Warmart. The arms length is not too short, there are side slits that are perfect for apple-shaped bodies, and the fabric drapes on the body so well.
If you’re shopping online, make sure you know your body measurements so you can pick out the right size.
SAY IT WITH ME: BALANCE
Balance and proportions play a big role when putting together outfits. If you’re wearing a tighter fitting t-shirt, pair it with a flowy skirt or a pair of baggy pants. If you’re wearing a looser t-shirt, balance the oversized look with a tighter pair of pants. My go-to pair has been the Spanx Faux Leather Leggings. They instantly make a boring t-shirt look trendy.
PAIR WITH STATEMENT PANTS
A simple t-shirt is so versatile, you need very minimal effort to dress it up. A favorite tip I swear by when it comes to putting together outfit is to wear one to three colors. This will give it a clean, chic look. With that in mind, use some a pair of statement printed pants to add some spice into your look.
Just because you have on a simple t-shirt doesn’t mean you should skip out on this step. Accessories are the cherry on top to any outfit. Add a pair of pumps and statement jewelry to dress up a look. Or keep it casual by throwing on a cap and some sneakers. Either way, this is an easy way to change up your look.
And that’s it, those are my tips on how to style a t-shirt! Keep these tips in mind the next time you grab a t-shirt to wear.
